Polyurethane Valve Core

Polyurethane Valve Core

Polyurethane (PU) valve cores are specified where abrasion is the primary life-limiting failure mode — slurry lines, high-solids media, high-cycle dynamic sealing, and applications where a conventional rubber compound would wear through in a fraction of the intended service interval. PU is not a conventional rubber; it is an elastomeric polymer whose mechanical strength and abrasion resistance exceed those of any standard vulcanizate, while retaining the elastic compliance required for sealing function.

Product Introduction

Polyurethane (PU) valve cores are specified where abrasion is the primary life-limiting failure mode - slurry lines, high-solids media, high-cycle dynamic sealing, and applications where a conventional rubber compound would wear through in a fraction of the intended service interval. PU is not a conventional rubber; it is an elastomeric polymer whose mechanical strength and abrasion resistance exceed those of any standard vulcanizate, while retaining the elastic compliance required for sealing function.

Operating temperature range is from -40℃ to +70℃. For aqueous service, the fluid temperature must be confirmed before specifying PU.

Introduction to Performance

Operating Temperature

−40°C to +70°C

Abrasion Resistance

Exceptional - highest among standard elastomers; suited to abrasive slurry and high-cycle dynamic contact

Tensile Strength

20–60 MPa (significantly higher than NBR or FKM)

Hardness Range

Shore A 50 to Shore D 60 - widest range of any elastomer

Hydrolysis Resistance

Limited; avoid sustained hot water (>60°C) or steam service

Introduction to Processing Techniques and Materials

TGE Polyurethane Valve Cores are produced by either cast elastomer or compression-molded millable gum processes depending on geometry and production volume. In TGE, we use molding process. Millable PU gum is processed similarly to conventional rubber compounds and suits tighter-tolerance bonded assemblies.

Metal substrate preparation follows the same shot-blast and adhesive primer sequence used across our product range. Isocyanate-based bonding systems are used for PU-to-metal bonding, and the interface is particularly sensitive to surface contamination - degreasing and priming steps are performed in a controlled environment. Hardness and formulation type (polyester vs. polyether PU) are selected by application: polyester grades for maximum abrasion and oil resistance; polyether grades where hydrolysis resistance is the priority.

Typical Applications

Typical Applications for Polyurethane Valve Core include:

Mining and mineral processing slurry valves (high-solids, abrasive media)

Sand and gravel processing - classification and transport control valves

High-pressure water jetting system valves

Hydraulic cylinder valve components - high-cycle dynamic sealing

Coal preparation plant flow control valves

Oilfield fracturing equipment (high-pressure, short-duration service)

Advantages

In abrasive service, the relevant performance metric is not material cost per unit but material volume consumed per unit of operating time. PU's abrasion resistance routinely extends service intervals by three to five times relative to NBR in slurry applications - a factor that determines total maintenance cost and unplanned downtime frequency far more directly than purchase price.

We select PU grades to the application. Where the operating conditions are within NBR's capability, we will recommend NBR. Where abrasion is the constraint, we supply PU with the compound type, hardness, and bonding system matched to your specific medium and duty cycle.
